The Fußball-Bundesliga, referred to simply as the Bundesliga, is the top soccer league in Germany that consists of 18 clubs. The league runs from August through May and it has the highest average stadium attendance of any domestic league in the world. Each club in the league plays 36 matches facing every other club twice with one home match and one away match.
The league was founded in 1962 and Bayern Munich has been the dominant club with 23 league titles. Hamburger SV is the only club that has been in the top division every season since its inception. Most of the matches in the league are played on Saturday and Sunday.
All of the clubs in the Bundesliga qualify for the DFB-Pokal and the winner of the league also qualifies for the DFL-Supercup. These are both German domestic cup competitions. The Bundesliga is actually two divisions in Bundesliga 1, which is the top division, and Bundesliga 2, which is the second highest division.
The clubs that finish in the top three in the league table automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage. The fourth place finisher qualifies for the Champions League playoff round. The fifth and sixth place clubs qualify for the Europa League playoff round and third round qualifying respectively. No matter what position a club finishes in the Bundesliga table if they win the DFB-Pokal they are in the group phase of the Europa League.
At the end of the season the two clubs that finish at the bottom of the Bundesliga table are relegated to the Bundesliga 2 for the next season. The top two finishers in the Bundesliga 2 are promoted to the Bundesliga. The third from the bottom finisher in the Bundesliga faces the third place finisher from Bundesliga 2 in a home-and-away leg where the winner plays in the Bundesliga the following season.
