Does Arsenal Have a Chance?

Arsenal is in the lead in the Premier League and is solid on both sides of the pitch, but do they have any chance at beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League? The Gunners face the German giants and the Champions League defending champion in the first round of the knockout stage.

Last season in the knockout stage Bayern beat Arsenal en route to their fifth Champions League trophy.

After the draw was announced Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated that the Arsenal draw was, "the most awkward draw we could get.” He went on to say "They are the Premier League leaders. We don’t need to be warned. Some 10 months ago, they beat us 2-0 in the second leg of the last 16.”

In six Champions League encounters Bayern has three wins, Arsenal has two, and there has been one draw.

In the first leg Arsenal will play as the host, but they are still major underdogs. Bet365 has them at +300 with Bayern Munich at -120 and a draw line at +275.

Bayern is also the betting favorite at Bet365 to win the Champions League at +225.

The Gunners will have to deal with a Bayern Munich squad that finished first in the Champions League group stage and has gone through the 2013 Bundesliga campaign without a loss.

While Arsenal is the big underdog in this draw they did beat Bayern Munich in Munich last season 2-0 after losing the first leg at home 3-1. Also, Bayern lost at home to another Premier League side Manchester City 3-2 in the group stage of the Champions League this season.
