Another USA Win, But Questionable

While the USA won another friendly facing Turkey this last Sunday the Americans’ once again, were not overly impressive. OK, so they did win 2-1, but they were on home soil and facing a Turkey squad that will not be playing this summer in Brazil.

The Americans have won two straight friendly matches, but both were in the States and before the Turkey win they had a lackluster 2-0 win over Azerbaijan, who are 85th in world according to FIFA rankings.

Turkey head coach Fatih Terim stated when asked how the Americans will fare in Brazil,  "I believe that they can do a very good job.” However, USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann stated after the match, "We still have a lot of work ahead of us.”

The Good

With two wins in a row the US does have some confidence heading to Brazil and they have one more friendly facing a good Nigeria team. In the Turkey match Fabian Johnson scored the first goal for the Americans from a fantastic pass from Michael Bradley and those players spots in the starting lineup should be secure.

Captain Clint Dempsey did not play in the Azerbaijan match due to an injury and he scored the second goal in the Turkey match.

Defender John Brooks was a surprise addition to the USA final 23 and he played well in the Turkey match and may get the start against Ghana in the Americans World Cup opener.

The Bad

The United States defense has not looked good in their tune-up matches, as they lack cohesion. They struggled for portions of the Turkey match even though they almost kept a clean sheet. The miscommunication issues the Yanks have had cannot happen in Brazil, especially since they are playing in the Group of Death.

Timmy Chandler did have a great cross to Dempsey for the second goal, but as a defender he was beaten soundly down the left wing at the end of the game and was the reason for the penalty kick, which Turkey buried to get on the scoreboard.

Jozy Altidore’s performance in the Turkey match could be good and bad, as while he constantly harassed the defenders of the Turkish squad he was timid around the box and his scoring drought continues.

USA opens the World Cup facing Ghana on Tuesday June 17th where Bet365 has them as the slight betting underdog at +175 with Ghana at +160 and a draw line of +220.
