Odds Algeria Will Win World Cup 2014

Algeria first qualified for the World Cup in the 1980s, appearing in back-to-back tourneys in 1982 and 1986. After a 24-year absence, they qualified in 2010, and with their 2014 appearance are once again appearing in back-to-back tourneys. In 2010, the Algerians finished last in the Group Stage, failing to score a goal but earning a draw against eventual group winners England. Sporting +2800 odds of winning Group H, Algeria are in a similar situation heading to Brazil 2014.

Lacking depth and discipline, Algerian is deficient in every position. Their greatest strength may be in the midfield, but given their reliance on long shots, Algeria will once again be hard pressed to score a goal at the 2014 World Cup, let alone record a victory. The best that Algeria is likely to hope for, prior to their early exit from the tournament, is to score on a penalty kick or due to an opponent’s costly mistake.

Early World Cup Pick

Although Group H is considered one of the weakest groups in the 2014 World Cup, Algeria will still be outclassed by each of their opponents. The pain will start early for Algeria when they face Group H favourites Belgium in their opening match. It has been 12 years since these two squads last met, in a friendly match won 3-1 by Belgium. The Belgians should dominate in every area en route to a fast start to their tourney. Algeria faces another strong offensive opponent when they take on South Korea. The South Koreans struggled in qualifying and will field a goalkeeper who has been prone to on-field mistakes, giving the Algerians their single best chance to earn points at this year’s tourney. Algeria’s Group Stage schedule concludes against Russia, whose stingy defense is unlikely to allow an Algerian goal.
