Odds Chile Will Win World Cup 2014

After a standout performance in World Cup qualifying, capped by five wins and a draw in their final six matches, Chile have emerged as a dark horse of choice at the 2014 World Cup. However, high hopes among Chile supporters have been tempered after the squad drew into a group that includes Spain and the Netherlands, finalists in the 2010 World Cup. Currently ranked No. 13 in FIFA’s world rankings, Chile is pegged at an attractive 40/1 to win it all in Brazil.

In addition to their strong finish in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying, Chile has also looked strong in recent competition against WC-qualified squads; posting wins over England and Ecuador and draws against Spain and Colombia. However, Chile has also dropped a pair of one-goal decisions to powerhouses Brazil and Germany. Chile will enjoy the benefit of strong partisan support in the stands, as large numbers of Chilean supporters are expected to make their way to Brazil for the tourney.

Early World Cup Pick

For the second consecutive World Cup, Chile has drawn into a group led by Spain. In 2010, Spain handed Chile their only loss in the Group Stage, when reckless goalkeeping led to an early lead which Spain would not relinquish. Chile has never beaten Spain but will draw inspiration from their recent 2-2 draw against the defending champs. The make-or-break match for Chile will likely be against the Netherlands. The two squads have never faced each other, and appear to be going in different directions of late, as the Dutch continue to struggle against elite competition. Chile will face Australia for the first time since 1974 and are expected to be heavy favorites in that match.
