Odds Mexico Will Win World Cup 2014

Mexico will be seeking redemption when they take to the pitch at the 2014 World Cup. The squad struggled during the CONCACAF fourth round of qualification, eking out just two wins, over Jamaica and Panama, in 10 matches. In fact, the Mexicans needed a victory by the USA over Panama, in the last match of the round, to back in to an intercontinental playoff with New Zealand, which they won handily.

Mexico Odds to Win World Cup 2014: 100/1 (from Bovada)
Mexico Odds to Win Group A: +900 (from Bovada)

Mexico will be looking to move beyond the Group Stage in the World Cup for a sixth consecutive time and  reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1986. Aside from their fourth-round travails, the Mexicans have enjoyed some recent success on the international stage including winning Olympic gold in London in 2012, and claiming the Gold Cup championship in 2009 and 2011. Mexico will play friendlies against Israel, Ecuador, Bosnia-Herzegovinia and Portugal in the two weeks prior to the World Cup.

Early World Cup Pick

For the second consecutive time, Mexico has drawn into the same group as the World Cup’s host nation. In 2010, that was South Africa. Mexico will face a tougher challenge against host Brazil this time around. However, despite being distant underdogs to win Group A, Mexico has proven capable of competing with Brazil, after defeating them to win gold in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Mexico will likely be heavy favorites when they play Cameroon in the first ever meeting between the two. According to oddsmakers, Mexico’s closest competition is Croatia, who Mexico defeated in the Group Stage of the 2002 World Cup. Their match against Croatia is likely to determine Mexico’s fate in the Group Stage.
