Odds Uruguay Will Win World Cup 2014

Uruguay may be the highest ranked squad in Group D, No. 6 in FIFA’s world rankings, but they currently trail Italy in odds to win the group. Uruguay is pegged at +180, just behind the Azzurri, who sit at +150. The last time the World Cup was held in Brazil, Uruguay won. But that was 1950. This time around, Uruguay must contend not only with Italy, but also England and Costa Rica, in arguably Brazil 2014’s most competitive group.

Uruguay Odds to Win World Cup 2014: 22/1 (from Bovada)
Uruguay Odds to Win Group D: +180 (from Bovada)

The reigning Copa America champions reached the semifinals of the 2013 Confederations Cup before dropping a 2-1 decision to Brazil, and had to settle for fourth place after losing to Italy on penalties in the bronze medal game. However, Uruguay bounced right back, posting impressive victories over top-tier competition, defeating France and Japan in friendlies, and topping Colombia and Argentina in World Cup qualification matches, and appear ready to challenge in Group D.

Early World Cup Pick

Uruguay will be looking forward to their group stage match against Italy. In addition to being the choice of oddsmakers in Group D, Italy also denied Uruguay a place on the podium at the 2013 Confederations Cup. Uruguay faces Italy in their final match of the group stage, a game that may determine the Group D winner. Uruguay will also face a challenge from England, whom they last faced at a World Cup in 1966, the last time England won the championship. The two squads have met only twice in the last 20 years with England recording a win and a draw. Costa Rica, a squad that Uruguay has never lost to, is a +5000 longshot in Group D.
