Odds USA Will Win World Cup 2014

It was the nightmare scenario for USA when they were drawn into Group G, considered to be the “Group of Death” at the 2014 World Cup. Sitting at No. 13 in FIFA’s World Rankings at the time of the World Cup draw, the Americans could have just have easily drawn into a group in which they were favoured to advance. Instead, with odds of +1000, the USA is a longshot to win Group G.

USA Odds to Win World Cup 2014: 100/1 (from Bovada)
USA Odds to Win Group G: +1000 (from Bovada)

While USA may be a longshot to advance to the Round of 16, there is lots for American supporters to feel good about. With young stars like midfielder Michael Bradley and veteran leaders like Tim Howard on the roster, the American soccer program is moving in the right direction. However, given the quality of the competition the USA will face in the Group Stage, it is unlikely the USA will take the next step at the 2014 World Cup.

Early World Cup Pick

USA are +180 moneyline underdogs in their opening Group Stage match against Ghana. Unless the Americans put on a dominant performance in their opening match, they are likely to remain underdogs throughout the Group Stage. They faced Ghana in the last two World Cups, dropping a 2-1 Group Stage decision in 2006, and losing 2-1 in extra time in a 2010 Round of 16 match. The Americans have enjoyed more success against Portugal, winning their last two meetings. But that was over a decade ago and Portugal are now the clear favourite. The Americans last defeated Germany in tournament play at the 1999 Confederations Cup and will likely be a heavy underdog when the two squads meet on June 26.
