USA in Group of Death

The United States has high hopes for the 2014 World Cup with a solid squad, but they were unfortunate when the draw was announced being in the dreaded Group of Death. The United States is in Group G along with Germany, Portugal, and a Ghana team that knocked the U.S. out of the round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup.

While Group G is the Group of Death the case could be made that Group B should get that distinction. Ok, so Australia is in the group, but so is 2010 World Cup champion Spain, 2010 runner up Holland, and a Chile side that ended qualifying playing great.

Actually, if you take into account the average FIFA rankings of all four group teams Group D is the second toughest group. In Group D first pot squad Uruguay needed an intercontinental playoff to make the main draw, but they are still the top ranked team in the group followed by Italy, England, and Costa Rica.

Host Brazil is in Group A along with Croatia and Mexico, who both struggled in qualifying, and Cameroon.

France has to be happy to be drawn into Group E, which is absolutely the weakest group in the tournament. France almost did not qualify and needed a 3-0 win at home to beat Ukraine in the second leg of their European tie. Along with France in Group E is Ecuador, Switzerland, who are the weakest of the top pod seeds, and Honduras, who Bet365 has as the biggest long shot to win the World Cup.
