USA Needs Altidore to Snap Out of It

It is no surprise that Jozy Altidore made the USA squad, as he is the main striker and the one player that has to play well this summer in Brazil. This is especially the case since the Americans are drawn into the Group of Death. However, Altidore has been in a major drought when it comes to scoring and if the Yanks are going to get out of their killer group he will have to be one of the main reasons.

Altidore He was named to the 23-man USA squad even though he had a terrible first season at Sunderland in the Premier League this club season. In 31 matches he scored a grand total of one goal. He came to the EPL with high hopes after Sunderland paid a $10 million transfer for him. In the 2012-2013 season playing for AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie he scored 31 goals including 23 in league play.

The striker did not adjust well to the style of play in the Premier League, which is very physical and this summer has his work cut out for him facing the great squads of Germany and Portugal in group play.

USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann is putting a lot of faith in the striker since he has no real backup, as Terrence Boyd was though to be that guy, but he was among the seven players cut from the squad recently. Altidore will team up with Clint Dempsey up front and while the Sunderland forward is struggling Dempsey is the third leading scorer in the MLS so far this season.

The USA recently beat Azerbaijan in a friendly and they won 2-0, but Altidore did not score. The Americans have two more tune-ups before the World Cup begins playing a couple of solid teams in Turkey and Nigeria, who will be playing in Brazil.

When asked about Altidore before the Azerbaijan match Klinsmann stated, "He is on a very good path.” However, if that path does not lead to some goals come June America will be hard pressed to advance to the last 16 in Brazil.

The odds for the Americans at Bovada have not changed much to win the World Cup overall being major long shots at +22500. However, after having the worst betting odds to win their group when they were released they now have the third worst odds (+1100) passing Ghana a few weeks back.
